Why a pet does not make a good Christmas gift

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Everyone who knows me well knows that I am heavily against buying pets as Christmas gifts for other people. Regardless of whether you know the person would like one or not, it just isn’t a good idea!

Mojo was given to me as a Christmas present and I had absolutely no idea he was coming. I had no litter or tray, no food or bowls to put it in and no bedding for the little kitty to go to sleep in at night. And more to the point, I was still living at home and had no idea what my mum would think about it at all! She was pretty mad at first but we are not the kind of people who would turn an animal away. After all, one of our previous dearly loved cats, Puss, also dropped in on our doorstep one day. So out we ran to the pet store, getting everything we needed. Mojo was one of the lucky ones - we were prepared to accept him into our lives and he did not end up in the shelter that year, unlike countless other pets who are bought without consideration every year as Christmas gifts. He was a poorly socialised kitten and way too young to have been taken away from his mother. But with lots of effort, perserverance and forgiveness for his quirks, he has blended nicely into our household - although he remains extremely moody and unable to play without his claws out.

Paris, one of our peachfaces, was another animal that was purchased as a Christmas gift for a nephew. She was boomeranged back to the gift giver, who then passed her and a new cage mate onto us. When she came to us, she was very high strung and would attack our hands if we put them in the cage to change her water or feed. She has since settled down and realised that we are not going to hurt her. She just wasn’t a good choice for a household full of young children whose curiosity often leads them to be far too rough with animals. Not to mention, she was considered to be too noisy as well. Anyone who has owned a couple can tell you they are pretty noisy birds!

I’m not saying that all children lack the capacity to adequately care for a pet, nor am I saying that everyone you give a pet to at Christmas will not want it. But I do believe that if an individual wants a pet, they will seek one out themselves and find one that suits them and their lifestyle. What you consider to be a perfect pet for them may not be what they want. Or they may wish to have a pet but be unprepared for the financial burden of its upkeep. It doesn’t matter what kind of domestic pet you get, they are going to need some level of maintenance - whether it be veterinary care, feeding or cleaning of enclosures. Also, Christmas time is often a time where you feel sorry for those less fortunate and like to do something to help. Pity purchases from pet stores do nothing to reduce the strain on animal welfare societies at Christmas time - yes the animal may end up at a shelter if it is not purchased. But if you purchase it without consideration of its breed, temperament and needs, it could end up at a shelter anyway.

So if you or someone you know would like a pet for Christmas, please give it a lot of thought before you commit to a purchase. If you are considering buying a pet for a friend or loved one, please talk to them about it first.

Remember - a pet is a friend for life, not just the holidays.

Preferably with four legs, plenty of stamina, huge paws and a fondness for bones and roo meat! As you can see, site works has already commenced but it has come to a standstill due to the human crew currently being on strike. :P

Hide and seek??

themexicanstandoffThis is one of my favourite moments captured in time. It was taken Christmas last year when I had the dubious task of looking after Max (my sister’s cat) and Mischa was staying with me while mum went on holidays. I was working on a scrapbooking project in my study when I heard a small thud - so Mischa went to investigate with me close out her heels. The photo was exactly what I saw when I walked in the bathroom door. Now I’m not sure exactly what Max was trying to achieve here but I think maybe he was playing a little hide and seek with Mojo. Mojo wandered in, busted him perched on top of the shower recess and when he jumped down, he jumped the wrong way and ended up on the inside. Surprisingly, there was no barking, meowing or hissing. Just the three of them staring at each other waiting for someone to make a move. *hehe*

Rosie hasn’t quite mastered the art of hide and seek - you’re supposed to hide Rosie! Mojo on the other hand is a master at it by now. :D

Happy Gotchaversairy Mischa!

mischa

If you’ve looked in my profile lately, you’ll notice today is my birthday. I should be another year older and hopefully wiser too according to the old adage! But today is also another very special day in my family - it’s Mischa’s Gotchaversairy today, a term coined by Leigh which I feel marks the occasion nicely. Sometimes when we get our pets, their exact birthday is unknown - that certainly is the case with all of my furry babies over the years - so I like the term Gotchaversairy. :D

I’ve previously posted about the day I picked Mischa up from the pet store, it also coincided nicely with the fact that it was my birthday. She’s a special furry friend, my first ever dog of my very own and I miss her very much now that I’ve moved to Brisbane. Fortunately, the rest of my family is joining my sister and myself soon and we will get to see a lot more of each other….oh and the rest of my family of course!

Happy Gotchaversairy Mischa, here’s to many more! :D

Not a moggie but a doggy!

Okay so she’s not a moggie. :D This is Mischa, a 9yr old ridgeback cross who I found in a tiny pet store in Rockhampton when she was around 8 wks old. She was the last of her litter, the runt and the pet store owner was going to take her to the pound the next day. She had a small patch of ringworm on her flank, which the pet store owner knew about but had done nothing to treat. Consequently, even though she was lovely natured and sweet, no one was interested in buying her. Ringworm is so easily treated that I could not let her go to the pound where she probably would have been put to sleep. As it was, we took her home, the ringworm was treated and cleared up in no time. :D She loves cats to bits having lived the best part of her life with one - Mojo has her well and truly under his thumb even though they no longer live together. She has left her puppyhood behind now and is a good solid companion for my mum. I took this photo of her yesterday looking out over Moreton Bay from the pier at Wynnum beach.

Another shot I took once we got home. I think Mojo is just a little bit jealous that Mischa gets to check out the new deck and he doesn’t. :P

Rosie on the other hand has not really been exposed to too many dogs. Mischa would have liked to have gotten closer to meet her but if she came within a metre of her, but Rosie wouldn’t have a bar of it. LOL

Still she didn’t try to run away, she stood her ground, so I think she will adjust to dogs given time. :D
