52 Blessings - Week 1
After last year’s relatively unsuccessful AFW 365 attempt - a new photo each day for the whole year - Leigh has cottoned onto another photographic challenge. This latest one is called 52 Blessings, you’ll find a photo group on Flickr by the same name which started partway through last year. The idea is that each week, you post a photo of something that you are grateful for and say why. So from this week on, every Sunday this year is going to be a “52 Blessings” day. Well, providing I can keep it up.
This shot is taken from the portico outside the front of our house and it shows a few things I am grateful for. First and foremost, the rain that is pouring down at the moment. After a fairly tough year for the Water Commission, it seems there is some relief finally in sight. The rain is finally falling where it needs to and the catchments are getting much needed rain. I just hope the powers that be can keep it coming.
The second thing I am grateful for is the roof over our heads. Despite rising interest rates, the cost of petrol and groceries, we are still able to manage although other couples and families are struggling. It may not be a posh mansion but it is home and there is a good feeling knowing that the only reason we will have to move is if we want to.
Thirdly, my hedge row of lilly pillies beside the driveway that I planted as seedlings four years ago have grown into beautiful healthy plants, despite the fact that they only receive water from the sky or the fish tank. With the recent rains, they will be flourishing!

I like the 52 things idea. Having a lilly pilly hedge of my own that was planted in drought (now 5 years) I find that I prune them every 2 weeks to stop them getting taller than the house and to keep them in shape (about 20cm to trim off when it rains)…potential height 30m. They do shade the outdoor area nicely, but I now have an awesome set of pruning shears and for all that extra exercise they give me I may have to learn how to make lilly pilly jam. Pysillids gave them a bit of a hard time in their first few years of planting, but I ignore them and the plants do fine in spite of them. They are high maintenance plants. There’s a lot to be said for slow growing hedges I’ve learned. However chainsaw pruning to half size occasionally would probably work rather well, nothing will kill them…not drought, nor being in a metre of sludgy mud from flooding.
I’ve also planted a hedge of gardenias but having learnt my lesson, they are never getting to more than a metre in height. Pruning on a ladder is just not fun. I do have gardeners come in to mow the lawn and not one of them has ever taken me up on a little bit of extra money for pruning the hedges for me LOL. The people who bought the house behind me inherited a 5 year old lilly pilly tree that had never been pruned. It was taller than the house at that stage…they removed it. But they do flourish.

Love the banner and how it highlights the cats eyes. We are getting much needed rain at the present, only problem was the flooding and I had to find an alternative route home from work. It would have been tragic if I had to stay there overnight. *8 hours is enough. Its a nice challenge idea as we all have things we should be grateful for.

Thank you Aussie. It was a lucky find on a free Wordpress themes site so I can’t take any credit for it but I do love it.
And yes, can definitely agree with you on that one….8 hours at work is definitely enough!
